Our practices offer sedation for anxious patients to achieve a more enjoyable experience throughout their dental treatment.

What types of sedation are available?

Sedation can be administered in numerous ways depending on the desired level of sedation.

• Oral Sedation. Before treatment, sedative pills or tablets are used to provide sedation. Despite feeling drowsy, you will still be awake while taking this medication.
• Intravenous sedation (IV sedation) is when a sedative solution is administered through a vein in the hand or arm. You will remain fully aware but completely relaxed. Intravenous sedation is very quick and works well for most patients.
• Inhalation sedation is a subtle form of sedation. It is a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen inhaled via a nosepiece.

If you would like sedation as part of your dental treatment, your dental team will advise which sedation methods are available to you.

Regardless of which sedation type you are receiving, your dental procedure will be done under a local anaesthetic so that you are comfortable at all times.

What does conscious sedation feel like?

The reports vary depending on which type of sedation has been received and are entirely individual but mostly positive.

Many patients report feeling drowsy, tipsy, and relaxed. Although fully conscious, many patients who have received IV sedation cannot remember their time in the clinic at all.

After treatment, you can return home safely, but you must be accompanied by a friend or relative that can drive you home.
