What Is a Dental Crown?
A crown is a tooth-shaped protective covering that encapsulates and protects natural teeth.
Typically, a dental crown protects the entire visible surface of a tooth, restoring its size, shape, strength, and appearance. A crown may be an appropriate long-term dental restoration option if a simple filling does not repair your natural tooth.
What types of dental crowns are available?
There are many types of crowns available, and each has individual properties.
The most commonly used crowns are:
- Porcelain Bonded Crowns
- Full Gold Crowns
- Gold alloy crowns
The type of crown you require will be discussed with you as part of your bespoke treatment plan.
How long will a crown last?
With a robust oral hygiene routine and a lack of destructive habits, a crown should last 5-10 years.
How is a crown prepared?
You will need two appointments to complete treatment for a crown. The first appointment is to carefully shape the natural tooth to make space for the new crown. During this appointment, you will have a temporary crown fitted for comfort and aesthetics.
During your second appointment, you will have the crown fitted. Before fitting, we will always check that you are happy with the appearance and bite. Crowns are fitted using a strong dental adhesive, and you will be able to leave with a comfortable, protected tooth.
