An extraction is a dental term for removing a tooth and its root from the mouth. This is a routine treatment, and most of the time, the teeth are removed with little intervention.
Having exhausted all other options, extractions are a last resort. Several reasons can cause an inability to restore a tooth.
Wisdom teeth may be removed occasionally if they are repeatedly inflamed, or teeth may be removed if they have been subjected to years of gum disease, infection or periodontitis.
Following dental surgery, it is usual for you to experience a little postoperative discomfort. In most cases, this lasts up to two days and can be easily managed by taking over-the-counter medications. At the time of your dental appointment, we will take the time to discuss your aftercare and recovery.
Before the procedure, you must understand what to expect so that you are fully informed of any complications – however unlikely. Following your consultation and understanding of your expectations before, during, and after treatment, we will ask you to sign a consent form.
In order to ensure a truly comfortable extraction, we’ll administer a local anaesthetic once you’re ready. Our dentist will carefully examine the area around the tooth to ensure that it is numb before removing it. During the extraction, it is likely that you will feel a sensation of pressure, but you will experience no discomfort.
